Megalopyge opercularis
The Southern Flannel Moth is a species of flying insect found anywhere from the United States’ south and east coasts to Central America. They are better known for their larval form which is known as the Furry Puss Caterpillar. As caterpillars, they are covered in a thick layer of soft fur like that of a cat or ‘Puss.’ Although it may entice you to pet it, do not place your hand on the insect’s fur. The fur helps conceal a mass of adhesive, venomous spines that it uses as a defence against
potential threats. Stings can develop into a throbbing rash with mass swelling, hives and soreness. To treat the sting, first cover the site with cellophane tape and strip it off. This will help to remove spines. Apply an ice pack to the sting site. Immediately contact a physician if anaphylaxis or breathing difficulties develop. Many people have been hospitalized after petting the caterpillar. Adults are covered with a layer of colorful fuzz. Little is known about this animal's behavior or diet.
