RAILROAD WORMS

Phrixothrix

The Railroad worm is a bioluminescent and nocturnal beetle that dwells in rainforests. It gets its name from the light organs that run along the sides of its body. When these are lit they look like train windows. Many scientists believe that these yellow lights warn predators of their unpleasant taste. The Railroad Worm also has a red "headlight" which it uses to hunt Millipedes. When it sees a Millipede, it turns off its yellow lights and only uses its red light. Millipedes cannot see red light which makes the Railroad Worm somewhat invisible. The Railroad Worm then sneaks up to the millipede and then has a feast. And that! Is the end of the millipede. -David Attenborough
