Strophurus
Phasmid, spiny-tailed or striped geckos belong to a genus of lizards known as Strophurus. Phasmids measure about 4 In (10 Cm) long and are vibrantly decorated, the Golden Spiny Tailed Gecko (above) is among the most recognized. Most species in this genus have spines along the back or tail. All Phasmid geckos have an unusual defense mechanism. The tail of a phasmid geckos contains glands that produce a smelly, web-like liquid. When startled, the gecko raises its tail above the head and begins spraying the web through several nozzles.
All Phasmids are found in Australia's forests where they feed on small arthropods. The gecko will occasionally come to the ground for warmth.
Although rare, these geckos are sometimes sold as pets.
