GIANT SOFTSHELL TURTLES

Pelochelys

Pelochelys is a genus of large Turtles. Unlike most Turtles, these reptiles are round, flat and lack scutes, hence their name. The genus contains three species.

  • Pelochelys signifera

  • Pelochelys cantorii

  • Pelochelys bibroni

Softshells measure about 2-3 Ft (0.66-1 M) long and are a dull grey color. The turtle's eyes are rather small and bulge outward from its pointed head. The Turtle's nose is very pig-like and pointed.

Softshells spend most of the time hidden in riverbeds, waiting for prey. Their coloration helps them blend in with the sand and murky water. They wait for crustaceans, mollusks and small fish.
