Arapaima gigas
The Freshwater Arapaima or Pirarucu is a giant fish found in South America. They are among the largest freshwater fish on earth as adults measure 9 Ft (3 M) and weigh 400 Lbs (200 Kg.) The largest reported was over 15 Ft (5 M.) They are among the few fish that can breathe air and water. If an Arapaima is stranded, it can gulp air for a short amount of time.
Their diet comprises mainly of fish, but have been known to attack birds and small mammals at the surface. They have become endangered by overfishing as they can feed many people. Arapaima fishing has been banned in some areas. Arapaimas are caught by using a thick chord with a spear-like hook at the end. This hook is about 6 In (15 cm) long.
