DREADNOUGHTUS

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

Dreadnoughtus schrani

Dreadnoughtus was a species of giant sauropod and by far one of the largest that ever lived. It is estimated to have reached over 110 Ft (35 M) long and weighed up to 65 tons (59,300 kg.) Its head alone was 4.5 Ft (1.5 M) long. Like all sauropods it was a herbivore, feeding off of leaves and grass. The name dreadnoughtus is derived from the word dreadnought, a large warship designed to carry large guns while move quickly through the water. Its second name is in honor of Adam Schran who financed the study.

In 2005, Dreadnoughtus was discovered in Argentina by Kenneth Lacorova and his team of paleontologists. The remains took more than four years to fully excavate, and even longer to transport and study.
