BARRELEYE

Updated: Nov 27, 2019

Opisthoproctus soleatus The Barreleye or spookfish is a species of deep sea fish in the family Opisthoproctidae. They are found in most tropical seas but are also found near Ireland and in the south china seas. They get their name from their large, cylindrical eyes that sit inside its transparent head. Its head is built like this so that it can look straight up. When it needs food, it looks up into the dim sunlight. It waits until it spots the silhouette of a jellyfish. It darts into its stinging tentacles of the jellyfish to steal bits of food that the jellyfish has caught.
