VAQUITA

Updated: May 3, 2019

Phocoena sinus

The Vaquita (‘little cow’ in Spanish) is a species of porpoise found is the Gulf of California. They are among the most endangered animals on Earth as there are less than ten left. The population has decreased mainly by illegal gillnet fishing. Such a low population makes it difficult to study them. Vaquitas are the smallest Cetaceans reaching sizes of only 5.5 Ft (1.5 M). Their bodies are fairly stocky and the head is rounded.
