Litocranius walleri
The Gerenuk or Giraffe Gazelle is a species of antelope. It is known for its strange build, having slender limbs and a flat, triangular head. The fur covering their legs, back and head is red-brown, while the belly is a light tan. Females have a crown which is dark red to black. Adults measure about 4 Ft (1.2 M) tall and 6 Ft (2 M) long. Females are smaller by 0.5-1 Ft (0.15-0.3 M.) They have large eyes, with the orbits bulging upward over the skull. The horns, only apparent on males are S-shaped and has ridges running along them. The Gerenuk’s legs are very long and have small hoofs.
The Gerenuk is Diurnal, spending a lot of its time in the shade. They are typically found on plains where it is harder for a predator to ambush. They are preyed on by Cheetahs, Lions, Leopards, Painted Dogs and Hyenas. Herds are formed in groups of males and females and juveniles, usually having around four members. Males have Scent Glands near their eyes, which they use to mark territory.
The Gerenuk is a browser, feeding on shrubs and tree leaves. The most common part of their diet is Acacia. The pointed head helps it reach into thorny plants. They can go a long time without drinking water.
