SARCASTIC FRINGEHEAD

Neoclinus blanchardi

The Sarcastic Fringehead is a species of spiny-rayed fish found off the west coast of North America. They measure to be about 1 Ft (0.3 M) long. They dwell inside burrows that it digs by scooping up dirt with their mouths and spitting out of the entrance. They have also been seen living inside man-made objects such as pipes. They are extremely aggressive towards any trespassers. If something comes near its burrow, it opens its mouth widely and chases it away, hence the name ‘Fringehead.’ Their mouth is built with two bones on the upper jaw that rest backward. When the mouth is fully opened, the bones stretch out the skin around the jaw, making it appear larger. If another Fringehead tries to come near its property, they press their mouths against each other, and try to push the other away.
