PROBOSCIS MONKEY

Nasalis larvatus

The Proboscis Monkey is a species of simian endemic to the island of Borneo. They are named for their large and oddly shaped noses. The male’s noses are large and bulbous while the female’s are long, wrinkled and pointed. The use of the noses are unknown. One theory is that they are to attract a mate. The calls might be amplified by the nose which can help protect a female. Adults measure about 3 Ft (70 Cm) tall and weigh 50 Lbs (20 Kg.) They are covered in a thick layer of gold fur that covers every part of the body except for the face. They are critically endangered from habitat loss and overhunting.
