PALM COCKATOO

Avery D. Standard

Probosciger aterrimus

The Palm Cockatoo (Goliath Cockatoo or Great black Cockatoo) is a species of Parrot found in North Australia and Queensland. They measure about 2 Ft (0.6 M) and are a deep, smoky color. They are among the few known birds to use tools. They use large sticks to drum on logs or tree-trunks. This may help attract a mate. They can produce a large variety of sounds, more than most wild parrot species. These additional syllables help them communicate in long, complex sequences. They are threatened by habitat destruction in Cape York, but are not endangered anywhere else. They are popular in the pet trade, although they need to be fed a variety of nuts to stay healthy.
