JAGUAR

Updated: Sep 14, 2019

Panthera onca

The Jaguar is a species of great cat native to South and Central America. The Jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas, measuring 6 Ft (2 M) long. Like other species in the genus, Jaguars are covered in brown or black spots that help it camouflage in the rainforest. Melanistic (a gene disorder causing black fur) jaguars are commonly referred to as “Black Panthers*.” Their bodies are extremely muscular, making them quicker, stronger and more agile.

Jaguars are ambush hunters. They hide and wait for their prey. When they see something to eat, the rush forward and land on the animal with their claws. The Jaguar preys on many animals, such as Armadillos, Anteaters, Caiman, Coati and exclusively upon Capybaras. Jaguars are very solitary. Mothers only form groups with their cubs until they are old enough to feed and defend themselves.

The Jaguar population is listed as Near Threatened by IUCN. The decrease was mainly caused by poaching. After WWII, Jaguar skin clothing became extremely popular and was considered a sign of status. The poaching was not banned until the 1970s. Even though the ban has been placed, there is still jaguar smuggling happening in some parts of the world. The tiger is also threatened by deforestation and farming. The loss of habitat lowers its chances of catching prey.

* The Black Panther is a term for any large cat with black fur.
