GIANT SIPHONOPHORE

Updated: Apr 17, 2019

Praya dubia

The Giant Siphonophore is a deep sea cnidarian. Its habitat range is unknown, but is thought to live 2,000 (700 M) to 3,000 Ft (1,000 M) below the surface. They are the second longest animal on earth reaching over 160 Ft (50 M) long, although the stalk is only an inch (2.5 centimeters) wide. Its body is composed of many small animals called zooids. These zooids are completely transparent. Some of these zooids form tentacles for catching food while others are used for defense. The siphonophore is also bioluminescent. This may help attract food. The siphonophore has a bell-shaped part known as a pneumatophore which helps keep it buoyant in the water. Beside that are the nectophore which help propel the colony quickly through the water.
