Rupicola rupicola
Rupicola peruvianus
The Genus Rupicola is formed of two species of brilliantly colored birds native to South America. The Genus has been made famous from the bright crest that covers that covers the male’s head. The females are a dull red-brown color. They measure about 12 In (30 Cm) long and weigh 1 Lbs (450 G.)
They feed exclusively on fruit making them Frugivorous. They normally find this fruit from the rainforest canopy.
The males show off their courtship displays in large groups called Leks. They do so by dancing and showing off their crests and tail feathers and snapping their beaks. The females watch from low branches. The birds build their nests on the faces of cliffs, normally made of twigs which they stuff into ledges and crevices. The eggs hatch after about a month.
