CHEETAH

Cheetah in sprint

Acinonyx jubatus

The Cheetah is a great cat found on the plains of Africa. It is known worldwide as the fastest land animal on Earth reaching speeds of over 70 Mph (35 Kph). However, they can only do so in bursts. They are masters of stealth and attack. When the Cheetah spots prey (for example a Gazelle) it creeps up slowly through the grass. It waits silently for when its prey is distracted and most vulnerable, then it darts out of the grass and chases its prey. They Gazelle may leap into the air to avoid attack. When the Cheetah gets close enough, it pounces and subdues its prey. Though the Cheetah is a dangerous hunter, it is very docile around humans and has even been known to approach tour buses calmly. Reports of injury are very rare. The Cheetah was a popular pet for the Monarchs in Egypt although I would not recommend trying to keep one.
