Vampyroteuthis infernalis

The Vampire Squid is a species of deep sea cephalopod. The Vampire squid measures 1 Ft (0.3 M) long. Its dark coloration, webbed tentacles and red eyes give it a vampire like appearance, hence its name. Although, being called a squid and originally classified as an octopus, the creature is neither, and belongs to its own order; Vampyromorphida. When threatened, it wraps itself in its webbed tentacles. The webbing is covered in spines, making it difficult for a predator to attack. The Vampire Squid is covered in photophores. The animal has complete control over them. It can decide which parts are to be bright or dim, and how long they should be illuminated. However, it is unable to change color.

The Vampire Squid Lives at extreme depths of up to 3,000 Ft (910 M) deep. The feed on Detritus, bits of decaying matter that fall from above.
