LONG-HORNED ORB-WEAVER

Avery D. Standard

Macracantha arcuata

The Long-Horned Orb-Weaver or Curved Spiny Spider is a species of araneid found in the forests of East Asia. The spider is well known for the female’s large shell, which is brightly colored and covered in spines. Males are much smaller and lack a decorated exoskeleton, as common in many orb-weaver species. Adults can be bright red, yellow, black or white. Adult females measure 0.33 In (1 Cm) long while males measure just 1 Mm.

The Macracantha builds its web in the forests of east Asia. The webs are about 2-4 Ft (0.6-1.3 M) wide and as most Orb-Weaver webs are Y-shaped.
