TERROR BIRDS

Updated: Nov 23, 2019

Phorusrhacidae

Terror Birds are a family of extinct, giant birds that lived in South America. These birds were fast hunters and are considered the largest Apex Predators of the continent. The Terror Birds had massive, axe-like beaks, which were curved at the tip. suggesting that it was used to crush and tear prey. The average size of a Terror Bird was about 6.5 Ft (2 M). The largest species, Kelenken guillermoi, stood 10 Ft (3 M) tall. It is estimated that these birds could run up to 40 Mph (65 Kph.) Scientists claim that the species Titanis walleri had hands (in accordance to Dinosaur-Bird evolution,) although there is no reasonable evidence to support this. The only specimens of this species show one digit and no carpals. Even if the bird had hands, they would be nearly impossible to maneuver. The bird is believed to have subdued its prey by kicking, crushing or striking with its massive beak.
